What is worship?

A vibrant, communal response of praise, prayer, and service, centered on God's grace and Scripture, moving believers from head to heart to experience transformation through sacraments, music, and fellowship, uniting them with God and each other in "social holiness" to live out Christ's love. It's about recognizing God's worth, receiving grace, and growing in faith, not just a routine or performance.

Where to find us

LPUMC is located in Lexington Park, Maryland, just off Route 235 and across from Patuxent River Naval Air Station Gate 2.

To enter our parking lot, we suggest entering from N Shangri-La Dr, then making a left onto Great Mills Road and a right into the parking lot.

Feel free to park anywhere! You will make your way up the ramp or stairs, then through the glass door, where a friendly face will be there to greet you and help direct you to the sanctuary.

What to expect

  • As you head into the sanctuary, a greeter will hand you a bulletin which outlines our service for the day. While the bulletin is a helpful guide, there’s no need to worry about juggling books or bookmarking hymns — everything you need for worship, from song lyrics to scripture, will be displayed on the monitors at the front.

    Please feel free to make yourself at home and sit wherever you like! While some of our long-time members are 'creatures of habit' who might drift toward the same spots each week, there are absolutely no assigned seats here. We are just happy to have you in the room with us.

  • Our worship services are lively and spirited, featuring a thoughtful mix of traditional hymns and more contemporary songs. We believe that worship is a conversation with God, and we invite you to participate in a way that feels natural to you.

    Every service kicks off with a lively, upbeat worship song led by our praise band. If you happen to be running a few minutes late, don't worry! This is the perfect time to slip in, find a seat and join us.

    During our time together, we typically share in:

    • Music: A blend of classic hymns and modern songs that lift our spirits.

    • Prayer: A dedicated time where we pray for our local community, the world, and the specific needs of those around us. These prayers reflect our heart for others.

    • Scripture & Message: A reading from the Bible and a practical, encouraging message from Pastor Anna.

    • Communion (First Sundays): On the first Sunday of every month, we share in Holy Communion. Our table is open to everyone, and we invite you to join us in this special meal of grace.

    • Giving: An opportunity to support our mission and ministries (though as a guest, please don't feel any pressure to give!).

  • We celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of every month. In the United Methodist Church, we practice an "open table," which means you do not have to be a member of our church (or any church) to partake. If it is the first Sunday, you’ll find individual communion cups available near the entrance of the sanctuary, where you get your bulletin — please feel free to pick one up as you enter.

  • On Sunday mornings, we offer age-appropriate children’s programming for infants through grade 5.

    • As you enter the sanctuary, help yourself to one of our children’s worship bags. These are filled with paper, crayons, stickers, and stencils that children may use while they’re in service.

    • During the worship service, the children will be invited to come to the front of the sanctuary for a short children’s sermon. Parents or other adults are welcome to come with them.

    • After the children’s sermon, those interested will be escorted to the lower level for Kids Adventure Worship (KAW) via stairs located at the back of the sanctuary. KAW offers a Bible story, short video, games, and craft activities to teach a lesson about God’s love.

    • Rest assured that every member of our children’s ministry team has been background checked and has a heart for teaching kids about Christ’s love.

    • Nursery-aged children are also welcome downstairs after the children’s sermon. You may leave them in the care of the nursery volunteer or remain with them if you prefer.

    • If you or your children prefer to remain in the service, they are always welcome. Truly, children are a gift and their presence in church is something to be celebrated.

    • After the service, adults are requested to come downstairs using the doors and stairs in the rear of the sanctuary to sign out their child(ren) from KAW.

    • If you would like to tour the downstairs children’s area before the worship service, just let one of the ushers know.

  • The connection doesn’t end when the service is over! Immediately following worship, we invite you to join us for coffee, snacks, and a time of fellowship.

    Whether you’re a long-time member or visiting for the first time, this is a casual and relaxed space to meet new people, catch up with friends, and enjoy a treat. If you're new, it’s the perfect opportunity to ask questions or simply enjoy a cup of coffee in good company. We’d love to see you there!

Frequently asked questions

  • We currently provide a spirited traditional service at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary. This service is also live-streamed.

  • Whatever makes you feel most comfortable.  We have folks in jeans and a few in sports jackets and dresses.  It doesn’t matter.

  • In short, welcoming and uplifting.  All services offer a time of worship through prayer, music, a relevant message from the sacred text we know as God’s Word, a time of giving, and a time to experience God’s presence in community.  Most services are about an hour long.

  • Park in the parking lot off Great Mills Road and enter the set of doors nearest you. Someone will be there to greet you with a warm smile and assist you with next steps.

  • We practice open Communion.  All are welcome to the feast at the Lord’s table.  You do not need to be a member of Lexington Park UMC or any church to receive Communion.  All people are welcome to receive this gift of God’s grace.

  • Children are welcome to attend any worship service with their family. Many children (infant through grade 5) prefer to take part in our Sunday morning programs, including a short children’s sermon followed by age-appropriate activities about God’s love led by background-checked volunteers.
